Help control obesity with a healthy school lunch for your children

Your kids health and happiness is everything. Lose that and parenting becomes hard work. As parents we have the responsibility for the health and well being of our children. You are responsible for what they eat at each meal of the day.

Now sometimes it becomes harder when they are not with you or in your direct control. One of these times is at school, will they take a packed school lunch or eat cafeteria food. Schools are full of unhealthy kids who perform badly. They have back problems, headaches, and sinus as a result of being overweight.

To take control of your kids weight, you need to take care of their overall health. You may need to start with a visit to the doctor to see how healthy they are currently. Then you can create a daily program looking at exercise and diet.

Be Active Every Day

This will depend largely on how active they have been in the past, to how much you start with. Just ease into it, you don’t want to push them too hard – this needs to be fun. Make exciting fun times together, it only needs to be 30 minutes a day and you can break this up into 10 minute blocks if need be. Plan your day so you can fit this in. You can park further away from the shops so that it is a longer walk, or park on the bottom level of the car park and take the stairs up. It could be as simple as taking the dog for a walk or going swimming. Choose something your kids enjoy doing. Take one of their friends along, this is always a good distraction.

Choose Healthy Foods

Start by choosing mostly grains, then vegetables, followed by fruits and dairy then meats and little amounts of sugar.

When given the choice kids will generally make healthy choices. Especially when they are active as the body will not be wanting the sugary foods.

School Lunches

At school your kids have the power to eat or not to eat. So how do we help them to make healthy choices? This comes down to preparation. Sit down with your kids and look together at some healthy school lunches ideas and healthy school snack ideas, and decide on them together.

I have found a great resource to help your kids eat the correct foods is printing and coloring a food pyramid. This way they can then stick it on the refrigerator and think about it each time they go looking for food.
